What is the best age for my child to be assessed for orthodontics?
Referral from Your General Dentist:
Your child must first be referred by their general dentist to be considered for NHS orthodontic treatment. Dentists usually refer children around age 11–13, based on their dental development and bite.
Tracking Your Referral:
Once the referral is submitted, the dentist will provide you with a Unique Reference Number (URN). You can use this to track the status of the referral online at Track a referral | Dental Referrals
All referrals and the waiting list are managed on a regional basis by a third party.
Please Note:
Our practice does not have access to the NHS waiting list or updates on your child's position. All updates must be tracked via the NHS system using the URN provided by your dentist.
Assessment & Eligibility:
When your child reaches the top of the NHS list, you’ll be contacted for an assessment please make sure your details are up to date on the initial referral form and let your dentist know if you move address. We use a grading system called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) to determine NHS eligibility not everyone qualifies for free orthodontic treatment.
Waiting Times:
Due to high demand, the current waiting time for NHS orthodontic treatment is approximately 3 years.
Why consider private orthodontic treatment for your child?
If you're unsure whether to wait for NHS care or to pay on a private basis, we are happy to offer a free smile assesment to help you decide — with no obligation.
